Low-power UV can pass USCG tests, says Panasia

Panasia: Type-approval test confirms low-power UV is sufficient (credit: Panasia)

Panasia completed land-based USCG type-approval tests in sea water for its GloEn-Patrol filter and UV-based ballast water management system (BWMS) during November. This refutes “the misunderstanding that UV technology is able to meet USCG requirements only with high power consumption,” it said in a statement provided to BWTT today (2 December).

Two sets of tests were carried out in conjunction with DNV GL, one using a staining technique known as FDA/CMFDA, and one that uses the ‘most probable number’ (MPN) approach. The latter technique has not yet been approved by USCG so Panasia “will adhere to an FDA/CMFDA centric strategy to prove no dependence on the MPN method,” since this is the only USCG-approved biological efficacy testing methodology, its statement said.

As well as emphasising its system uses less power than other systems, Panasia also claims its GloEn filter has the smallest back flushing water loss. For a throughput of 350 m3/hr back flushing requires 0.1 litre/sec, compared with about 13 litre/sec for other systems, its statement reported.

The company is aiming to have USCG type-approval “before the fourth quarter of 2016,” it said.
